Title of the exhibition and book:
"Als mein Kind geboren wurde, war ich sehr traurig" ("When my child was born
I was very sad")
In April 2000 25 years elapsed since the end of the war in Vietnam. Most
people have forgotten that the Vietnamese still suffer under the
consequences of the war. The herbicide Agent Orange and its Dioxin are in
the food chains. Result: thousands and thousands of disabled human beings.
Altough scientists here and there are discussing what is proven and what is
not - it does not change the fact that the victims do exist.
This is a documentation (photo exhibitions, book, radio broadcasts, features
for print media) about the Agent Orange Situation in Vietnam.
It is a humanitarian and nonprofit undertaking.
The project is supported by Federal Office of Culture, Red Cross
Switzerland, Caritas Switzerland, Green Cross Switzerland, Terre des hommes
Switzerland, HEKS, Centrale Sanitaire Suisse, the cultural dept. of the
Swiss cantons (provinces) Basel, Baselland and Solothurn and others.
Goal: a campaign to help humanitarian organisations which are involved in
helping war victims.
Exhibition (ca. 100 photographs) and book (160 pages / 70 photographs)
contain:
- current photos of victims by Roland Schmid
- historical photos of the war made by photographers of the time of the war (Marc Riboud and René Burri, Magnum Paris)
- Some of the most famous Vietnam war photos which changed the mind of the world.
- Photos of today's everyday life in Vietnam made by Vietnamese photographers (Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists). This part in the exhibition only.
The book also contains a feature by our researches in Vietnam and in the USA
and an essay by Vietnamese authors (Joseph Do Vinh and Nguyen Thanh Cong and
an American author (Dr. Daniel Warner) about "25 years after". A German
author (Dr. H. G. Brauch) writes about the historical and current problems
of chemical weapons. Another chapter is about the history of the wars in
Vietnam.
